Surgery for gynecologic cancer can cause changes in a patient’s sexual desire or function. Psychologically the loss of female reproductive organs can create feelings of being undesirable, and partners are often hesitant to initiate sex after such surgery is completed. It is generally recommended to not resume vaginal sex until your post op check after a hysterectomybut for most patients 4-6 weeks post-surgery healing is sufficient to enough to not cause physical damage. If you are experiencing psychological or emotional distress as you attempt to resume intimacy, there are specialized therapists who can work with you and your partner to overcome those challenges.
